Michael Jackson marks Templar anniversary

The eccentric musician Michael Jackson has marked the anniversary of the day when a mysterious secret society, the Knights Templar, were forced into hiding almost seven centuries ago.

In a revelation timed to coincide with the infamous date, 13 October, a representative of the pop star's team spoke to the most popular tabloid newspaper in the UK to confirm that he is checked into his London hotel under the name of a famous Templar knight, Sir William Marshal. Exactly 2 years from today, in 2007, we will witness the 700th anniversary of the persecution of the Templars. The pseudonym is described as "partly" a "tribute" to the legendary medieval knights.

According to The Sun "newspaper", Michael Jackson "believes" he is the "reincarnation" of Sir Bill. This entirely fictional embellishment is typical of the dishonest and sensationalistic journalism exhibited by this tabloid. It makes an entertaining story, but the true meaning of the announcement from the Jackson camp and its timing would only be apparent to those who possess a certain degree of knowledge.

The most that anybody can conclude from this news that the musician has some interest in the topic.

WE always knew MICHAEL JACKSON was strange - but now he has taken his
weirdness into another realm.
Apparently, the oddball singer believes he is the 21st Century incarnation
of one of Britain's legendary knights of 800 years ago - Sir William
Marshal.
Jacko checked into London's Dorchester Hotel last week under the name of Sir William Marshal – who happens to be among the bravest knights ever.
Sir William worked for four kings including HENRY II and RICHARD THE LIONHEART, looking after their security. His reputation was so feared that he was known throughout the world simply as “The Marshal”. A source close to the Jackson camp revealed: “Michael likes to use various pseudonyms when he checks into hotels.
“William Marshal appealed to him because he’s a big fan of the British aristocracy.
“He picked the name himself partly as a tribute and partly to divert attention from himself. He thinks that lords and ladies stay at The Dorchester all the time. [But these would obviously not include famous knights who have been dead for eight centuries.]
I’ve been looking into the history books to find out more about the original Sir William.
He lived from 1146 and also worked with HENRY III and JOHN. William was one of the Knights Templar – featured in hit novel The Da Vinci Code.
Maybe Jacko got his idea from that. It could give a different slant to a couple of his music tunes too.

An ancient secret society; a demand for a papal apology; and a network of hidden tunnels. Strange things have been stirring in Hertfordshire recently. Oliver Burkeman goes in search of the Knights Templar and, perhaps, the cup of Christ
One of the problems with secret societies - especially the kind whose members exert a shadowy influence on the course of world events - is that they can be a bit difficult to track down. Never was this more true than of the Knights Templar, the ancient Catholic order rumoured, among other things, to know the whereabouts of the Holy Grail. Officially, the Templars don't exist, having been driven underground by the pope more than 600 years ago; in The Da Vinci Code, they are described as inhabiting "a precarious world where fact, lore and misinformation had become so intertwined that extracting a pristine truth was almost impossible". Nobody even seems to agree on what the Holy Grail is: some say it is the cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper; others that it was used to collect his blood at the crucifixion. Needless to say, the Templars haven't been too eager to clarify any of this publicly.
